Greetings, fellow birders!
Later in October, I'll be asking you to confirm your participation in the fifth annual Vieques Audubon Christmas Bird Count. Stay tuned, check your calendar, and spread the word.
Today I want to share a few reasons why the Vieques Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is so important:
It creates long-term scientific data. The CBC has run since 1900, and repeated counts let scientists track changes in bird populations and distributions over many decades. CBC data have contributed to more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific studies.
Vieques is part of the Caribbean bird picture. Puerto Rico has participated in the CBC since the 1972–73 count season. Data from Caribbean locations are especially useful because they document birds and population changes in a region that is different from mainland North America.
Our CBC provides a snapshot of Vieques during winter. Counting birds at the same time each year helps document which species are present, how abundant they are, and whether those patterns change over time. This includes resident birds as well as wintering or migratory species.
Our CBC can reveal environmental changes. Changes in bird numbers or species presence can signal shifts in habitat, food availability, weather, and climate. Across the broader CBC dataset, researchers have used the data to identify population declines and shifts in bird ranges associated with environmental change. Sadly, initial reports suggest that our beautiful Vieques bird populations are either declining or changing. You may see fewer birds this year, and new birds may be on the horizon.
Our CBC supports conservation of local habitats. Vieques contains beaches, wetlands, dry forests, mangroves, lagoons, and other habitats that support different bird communities. Repeated observations help document what those habitats support and can complement more specialized wildlife surveys.
And finally, our CBC turns local birdwatching into community science. Volunteers aren't simply making a list of birds—they're contributing observations to a hemispheric dataset researchers and conservationists use. Audubon describes this long-term community participation as one of the CBC's major strengths.
In short: the Vieques Audubon Christmas Bird Count is valuable because a single day's observations become much more meaningful when repeated year after year. It builds a long-term record of Vieques' birds and ecosystems, while also contributing to a broader understanding of how bird populations are changing across the Caribbean and the Americas.
I hope you will join us, and I look forward to your registration and participation!
