Greetings, fellow birders!
Preregistration is required for the Vieques Christmas Bird Count (CBC) because our count is a structured, real census that doesn't easily accommodate drop-in participants.
We use pre-registration information to manage several critical components of the count:
Assigning Predefined Routes: Pre-registration allows us to assign volunteers to specific, predetermined birding routes to ensure complete geographic coverage without overlapping or duplicating efforts.
Pairing by Skill Level: The CBC welcomes birders of all levels, from beginners to experts. Collecting skill levels in advance lets us balance teams, ensuring that novices are paired with experienced birders who can support them.
Managing Logistics and Access: Some routes require coordinating pre-arranged access to hard-to-find areas. We need exact headcounts and contact information to secure permissions, arrange transportation if necessary, and finalize logistics for the after-count CBC potluck.
Documenting Scientific Effort: Because the CBC tracks long-term scientific data, researchers must account for "observer effort" (such as the number of people and the total hours spent birding). Gathering participant details in advance ensures data precision.
Your Safety: We want to know who you are and where you are birding in case you need help, or we need to find you. Although we conduct the CBC on an island, it is an island of mystery (after all, there may still be pirates out there waiting to capture you!)
